Made by Rufus Sisomor from the village of from Sawa in Northwest Asmat. The Asmat god of creation Fumeripitsj, being all alone, chopped down trees and created this type of figure with elbows and knees attached. Fumeritpitsj then made a drum and began playing it, and the figures came alive dancing. These were the first Asmat people, and the same dance is practiced today. This figure is holding a men’s bag which is worn around the neck and used to carry, tobacco, magic charms and necessities. Rufus is a master carver and has traveled to the USA, Germany and Australia for art exhibitions.
